Home Care New Hyde Park, Long Island NY

At North Island Dental Arts, our aim is to give you the best smile possible. While our experts work to give you excellent oral health and a bright smile, you also must work hard in achieving healthy teeth. Home care plays an important role in oral health. Without regular brushing and flossing, your teeth won’t be as healthy as you want them to be.

Personal dental home care begins with reducing the number of snacks, eating balanced meals and using aids such as floss to reduce the build-up of plaque and bacteria. Brushing and flossing twice a day will help you decrease the chances of periodontal diseases.

Brushing

Brushing is very important. The habit of brushing twice a day especially before going to bed reduces the chances of bacteria build-up. Our dentists advise patients to use an ADA approved toothpaste and toothbrush with soft bristles.

  • Place the brush at 45 degrees and brush in small circular motions. Do not press hard on the teeth or you might end up destroying the enamel of the tooth.
  • Clean the inside of the tooth using the tip of the brush
  • Remember to brush inner, outer and biting surfaces of each tooth from back to front.
  • Remember to brush the tongue to remove the bacteria build-up.
  • The team at North Island Dental Arts recommends electric toothbrushes. These toothbrushes are extremely easy to use and remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the toothbrush through gentle circular motions.

Flossing

Just like regular brushing, flossing is the best way to clean under the gum line and between the teeth. Flossing not only cleans between the spaces but removes any hard plaque and tartar that is stuck. Regular flossing also prevents any future build-up in the gums, bones and teeth.

  • Our expert dentists recommend about 12-16 inches of dental floss for a thorough cleaning. Wrap the floss around your middle finger. Make sure you leave no more than 2 inches of floss between your hands.
  • Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss to clean the teeth. Use a sawing motion; it will help you clean your teeth without hurting your gums.
  • Give your floss a ‘C’ shape and let your floss glide between the spaces of your teeth.
  • If you are not able to use the conventional floss, use a floss holder.

Rinsing

After brushing and flossing, the last thing you should do is rinse. Rinsing helps to clean the mouth even when you are not able to brush or floss.
