A dental crown, also known as a dental cap, is a covering that encases a damaged natural tooth. They are false teeth used to improve the functionality and appearance of the damaged tooth. A crown strengthens the tooth structure that cannot be restored with any other type of restorations.
There are several types of dental crowns but porcelain crowns on front teeth are the most popular. They are extremely durable and can last up to several years. Porcelain dental crowns are customized to match the shape, size and color of your natural teeth, giving you a beautiful and long lasting smile.
The procedure for placing the crown usually takes two appointments. In the first appointment, our dental expert will take highly accurate diagnostic models of your tooth to create your custom crown. A mold will also be taken to create a temporary crown that will be placed in your mouth until your new crown is fabricated. During the same appointment, your dentist will numb the tooth, remove the decay and prepare it for the crown.
During the second appointment, which is usually scheduled two weeks after the first appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the final custom crown is added. At this point, the dentist will make any required adjustments to the crown and then permanently cement it in place.
