Braces Vs. Invisalign: Which One Is Right For You?
March 1, 2021

Traditional braces and Invisalign are both methods of teeth straightening. If you have crooked or misaligned teeth and are considering receiving dental treatment to straighten them, you have two treatment options to choose from – Invisalign and traditional braces. While Invisalign is a relatively new method of straightening crooked or misaligned teeth without wires and brackets, braces have been used for decades. Traditional braces and Invisalign both have their pros and cons. The treatment method you should opt for will depend on the severity of the condition of your teeth.

What are traditional braces?

Traditional braces are a reliable treatment for straightening severely crooked, misaligned, or rotated teeth. These consist of metal braces with individual brackets for each tooth that is connected via a metal wire. The metal wire is tightened during each visit to adjust each tooth gradually into a proper alignment. These cannot be removed until the treatment has been completed. Metal braces sometimes may cause abrasions.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a new treatment method to straighten teeth without using any installation of metal braces or wires. It can fix a wide range of dental problems such as gapped or crooked teeth, underbites, overbites, and crowded teeth. This method consists of custom-made removable plastic aligners referred to as trays which are used to straighten a patient’s teeth. Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners appear virtually invisible. The aligners fit more comfortably, do not cause abrasions, and are removable whenever the patient is eating or doing any activities. It is a much painless method of teeth straightening, so it is a preferred method by patients.

How do braces and Invisalign work?

Traditional braces use metal braces that are affixed to each tooth, whereas Invisalign does not use metal braces. Invisalign treatment consists of clear tray aligners, which are usually made of plastic. Metal braces keep the teeth in place with a metal wire and will be noticeable. In the Invisalign treatment, clear custom trays are used to move your teeth into the desired alignment. These trays are designed for a custom fit as per each patient’s requirements and are hardly noticeable. Different trays are custom-made during the treatment to shift and straighten teeth and are usually changed every 2-3 weeks. While braces are installed once, and the wire is tightened to align teeth. Based on the condition of your teeth, the treatment may take 9 months to 15 months to complete the Invisalign treatment, while the treatment with traditional braces may last from 1 to 3 years.

Which is the better choice for you?

Invisalign is very comfortable and does not hurt or rub your mouth as traditional braces and wires do. The Invisalign treatment method is much better than metal braces in terms of pain, swelling, and soreness. If your teeth alignment issues are not severe, Invisalign might be an excellent option for you. However, if you have severe teeth issues that need a major adjustment, traditional braces might be a better option for you.
